Why Cycle for Safe Water in 2021?
Together, we can change lives with safe water
Across the world, there are more than 600 million people living with no access to safe water. Without a reliable supply of clean drinking water, women and girls spend up to six hours a day walking to and from the nearest water source and even then, there's no guarantee that it's safe to drink.
This time-consuming, back-breaking task prevents women from working and children from going to school. Families struggle to break free from poverty and generation after generation is faced with the same obstacles.
With safe, clean water at their door, a decent toilet and an understanding of good hygiene, life changes. There's more time to work and earn money, to go to school and to make progress.
In 2021, you can transform people's lives by taking to two wheels.
How your money can help
In 2018, cyclists visited the village of Badimetta where they met Anandu and Karanama and their three children, aged fourteen, five and two and a half. As they chatted, Anandu explained that a year ago, collecting water used to take up all their time. They'd walk several km to and from the nearest source, leaving little time to work. To avoid making yet another trip, they'd often go without bathing or washing their clothes, just so there was enough to drink. They hated feeling dirty and the fact that their children looked scruffy but they had no choice.
With help from FRANK Water and its supporters, Badimetta now has its own gravity-fed water supply system (GFWSS). Water is piped from a spring downhill into a storage tank, and from there, to taps across the village. Today, Anandu can leave a pot cooking on the stove and walk just a few metres to get the water they need. Their children are clean and well-turned out and the older two attend school everyday. Their lives have changed.
You can help more families like Anandu & Karanama.
By taking part in Cycle for Safe Water 2021, you'll be part of the team that provides more than 800 people with safe water, a toilet and good hygiene, for life.
